Cameroon: Online Exclusive

Katie in CameroonOur current May/June issue of Worldwide Challenge features a blurb from writer Katie Croft about her trip to Cameroon (Outlook section, pg. 10).  But there’s still quite a few untold stories from her trip, including details and photos about the 45 hour journey from America to Cameroon. Since you’re our loyal online blog-friends, and because we like you so much, we want to share them with you.

Follow the link to read her trip entries and view photos that you didn’t see in Worldwide Challenge.

Keeping up with the WWC team

It’s a busy time of year in the Worldwide Challenge office.  Here are a few updates on what we’re up to, who is headed where, and other office miscellany:

  • Stinters out- This Friday we bid adieu to our awesome stinters (More on the Lake Hart Stint program in the previous post).  However, we’re very excited that Greg S. and Katie will, like boomerangs, be making their way back to us very soon.  How could you not want to come back to this team?
  • Weary travelers in, then back out- Becky gets back from one trip only to turn around and hop back on a plane for India for her next assignment.  No need to unpack!
  • The next issue in the works- The July/August issue came back from our design group, and it looks great.  I can’t give away too much, but you can look forward to seeing some amazing photos from Cambodia.
  • What’s new- The blog isn’t the only new thing at WWC, be on the look out for some exciting changes in the magazine (details from Chief Editor Mark Winz to come) and on the Web site.

That’s all for now, see you back soon!

Upcoming: Lake Hart Stint (and a lesson in creativity)

An article in the September/October issue will feature the story of Indy and Dawn Little and their participation in Lake Hart Stint 2008-09.

The Lake Hart Stint is a 10-month, one-time program made available to all staff members of Campus Crusade for Christ. Participants come to World Headquarters in Orlando and fulfill a position of need in exchange for a season of heightened personal input, development and greater opportunity for an intimate, heart-connect with the Lord.

My wife, Linda, and I were members of Indy and Dawn Little’s small group during our 10 months on Lake Hart STINT.

We have been married 17 years, but we have seen through them how a zest for adventure can help to sustain a relationship.

Exercising some intentional creativity, the couple has acted with purpose in choosing to do something memorable and creative on their wedding anniversaries.

Year 1: It is a rare man who takes his wife to a Monster Truck Jam on a first anniversary and, in so doing, avoids the doghouse.

“I said, ‘No way, that is so cool,” recounts Dawn. “We were with 10,000 8-year olds. But we got to kiss on the JumboTron.”

Year 2: The couple went dog-sledding in Ely, Minnesota.

“It was magical—a crisp, gorgeous 19-20 degree winter day. We had lots of fun and laughs,” says Indy. “I once fell off. Dawn was still in the basket and I am trying to catch the sled, but the dogs are going faster than I could run. I had to pull an Indiana Jones—one of those moments beyond belief.”

Year 3: Private lessons at the St. Paul curling club.

Year 4: A swim with the manatees in the Florida sun.

Year 5: “We aren’t quite sure yet,” says Dawn. “I would love to watch a game of jai alai. But we will have to decide.”

Recently, one of the photographers Tom Mills and I traveled for a story about a student ministry.  While preparing to book our hotel rooms online, pop-up notifications insisted on telling us there were no rooms left that week–anywhere in the town. Confused, we finally called one of the hotels.

“Oh,” said the hotel receptionist, shocked that we, unlike the rest of the country, hadn’t heard the news. “Didn’t you know? The Wisconsin Cheesemakers’ Industry Convention is in town.”
